Brief introduction:
Milk thistle has been used as medical remedies for 2000 years. The plant itself now can be found in China, Europe and Northern Africa. Concentrations of silymarin are highest in the fruit of the plant, as well as in the seeds and leaves.
Application: liver protection
Modern scientific studies suggest that milk thistle extract can protect the liver from toxins. German Commission E approved the use of milk thistle for liver damage, inflammatory liver disease, and cirrhosis.
The active extract of milk thistle is silymarin, a mixture of the flavonolignans, silydianin, silychristine, and silybin. And silybin is considered to be the most biologically active. The flavonoids appear to be active as free radical scavangers and stabilizers of plasma membranes. (Harnisch G etc 1983; Hobbs C. 1992).
